Arkady Renko is exiled on Polar Star, a Soviet factory ship which trawls the freezing waters from Siberia from Alaska: current status seaman (second class), his movements shadowed by those who know his past.

Then Renko is given a chance to reclaim his freedom – by investigating a lonely and very mysterious death…


Over dit boek kan ik kort maar krachtig zijn: dit is een degelijke thriller-detetctive, die je tot het einde in zijn greep houdt en waarin het vooral heel vaak heel koud is. Het was een vreemd gevoel om over die polaire koude te lezen terwijl ik me op het warme strand op Borkum in het zonnetje koesterde. Maar, het was zeer zeker onderhoudende strandliteratuur!

Verder vond ik het interessant om te lezen wat voor uitwerking het vooruitzicht van een bezoek aan het “vrije Westen” (IJsland) op de bemanning van de Polar Star heeft en hoe de gevolgen van de perestrojka zelfs tot in de uithoeken van het Sovjetrijk doordringen.
