De lange tekst van de binnenflap geeft goed weer wat je kunt verwachten als je dit boek leest: een verhaal dat tegelijkertijd absurdistisch en serieus, humoristisch en schrijnend tragisch is. Een boek dat ik niet kon wegleggen, een boek dat grimmige gedachten opriep (want wat zijn de beschrijvingen van de bureaucratie herkenbaar en wat beschrijft Englander het verdriet van de moeder aangrijpend), maar ook een boek dat me, ondanks alles, deed schaterlachen (want wat is het een wonderlijke familie, deze familie Poznan).

Na het lezen van de verhalenbundel For the Relief of Unbearable Urges was ik al enthousiast over deze schrijver. Na het lezen van deze roman is dat enthousiasme alleen maar groter geworden. Wat een talent heeft deze man! Lees dit boek, en huil en lach van binnen mee met de hoofdpersonen!

De Nederlandse vertaling heet Het Ministerie van Buitengewone Zaken.
